Overview

SCO renewal is for those individuals that have an existing and current SCO registration that are nearing expiry. It is available as a single module for those wishing to renew a single registration or as a combination of modules where an individual would like to renew all their registrations at the same time.

The following renewal modules have a Lite version as well as a Full version:

Module 4: Routine Operations

Module 5: Form of Authority

The Full version of these renewal modules contain all the knowledge required of a standalone module taken alongside the SCO Core module. The Lite version of these modules contains the key knowledge relevant to the perimetry being covered but where the individual is taking/has already taken a related perimetry module within the last 6 months and, to avoid duplication, does not need to repeat certain common elements.

There are no Lite versions of modules for Module 2: Permit to Work and Module 3: Non-Routine Operations. These modules represent a higher risk level in the SCO hierarchy and, therefore, should be completed in full.

SCO Assessments are multiple choice and structured so that there is an assessment per module. Individuals must successfully complete training and assessment for all five modules to pass the course.

The course content is detailed below and has been developed in consultation with the Gas Industry to provide a uniform approach to health, safety, and environmental awareness training across the utilities sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive guidelines.

If you have an old registration, then below is the new scheme equivalent.

SCO Module Renewals

SCO module renewals are a critical component for maintaining compliance and safety within the gas industry. These renewals ensure that gas industry personnel involved in the safe control of operations possess the appropriate skills and understanding of gas network procedures. The SCO scheme consists of structured training and assessments to align with the latest revised SCO procedures. By following a robust renewal programme, companies can identify and address competency requirements for routine operation and non-routine operations, enhancing risk-based management and safety standards.

Gas distribution companies rely on the SCO scheme to train and authorize competent persons responsible for safe control and permit to work (PTW) systems. This includes understanding gas safety procedures based on established guidelines and identifying risks through comprehensive risk assessments. The initial programme and subsequent renewal programme incorporate EUSR SCO registration to verify the individual’s competency. With revised SCO procedures in place, authorising engineers can oversee operations and ensure that personnel have the suitable reading and writing abilities required for managing records and the form of authority in the gas network.

The control of operations SCO procedures aims to uphold high standards in gas safety systems by providing personnel with the knowledge and skills required for the effective management of emergency situations. Training courses for current SCO registrations focus on understanding the risk hierarchy and enhancing the skills of individuals to perform tasks safely. The revised SCO procedures identify necessary updates to safe control processes and state the authorising engineer’s role in maintaining adherence to these standards. For gas industry personnel involved, this is vital in ensuring that their permit to work system and records management processes are fully compliant with the SCO competency requirements.

FAQs:

What is the SCO scheme, and who needs it?

The SCO scheme is a structured programme for gas industry personnel involved in the safe control of operations, covering topics like gas safety procedures and permit to work systems. It is essential for competent persons, authorising engineers, and those managing routine and non-routine operations within the gas network.

How often do SCO module renewals take place?

SCO module renewals are typically required periodically to ensure that individuals remain compliant with the latest revised SCO procedures and maintain their competency in gas safety systems, risk assessment, and control of operations SCO practices.

Why is a permit to work (PTW) system important in the gas industry?

A permit to work system is crucial for maintaining safety and ensuring that all tasks are performed by competent persons under controlled conditions. It helps identify and mitigate risks, aligns with gas network procedures, and ensures compliance with the risk-based management approach outlined in the SCO scheme.

How does the SCO scheme support understanding gas network procedures and implementing own gas safety procedures?

The SCO scheme provides gas industry personnel with the necessary training to understand gas network procedures comprehensively. It also ensures that they can develop and adhere to their own gas safety procedures, aligning with industry standards and promoting safe, efficient operations within the gas network.
